I am moved by the 2022 historical decision of the U.S. Supreme Court reversing Roe v. Wade. This painting examines definitions of femininity and a woman's rights to her body and reproductive choices. This overruling will ultimately have a disproportionate impact on Black women and other women of color.

A Black woman in a glamorous pink dress sits in a peaceful and beautiful field of lavender. She is weighed down by a large red and white hat; and weeping tears of gold. The worth of her golden tears are in question. The red and white cross-connecting stripes illustrate the intersections of race, class, gender, and access.

Inspired by the biblical story of Adam and Eve, this painting explores themes of the purpose of men and women’s bodies on Earth and our connection with one another & to the natural world. Procreation, protection, nurturing, providing food and shelter, etc are explored in this painting. My motivation in creating this piece was to eliminate the guilt and shame the original story implicates women, our perceived vulnerability and our bodies in.

In 2014, African Americans had 2.2 times the infant mortality rate as non-Hispanic whites and are 3.2 times as likely to die from complications related to low birth weight as compared to non-Hispanic white infants. African Americans also had over twice the sudden infant death syndrome mortality rate as non-Hispanic whites.

“Rapture in Spring” is in recognition of all babies who didn’t fully blossom into this world.
